“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
GuideLives for the Journey: Ordinary Persons, Extraordinary Pathfinders is the title for a 13-part documentary series about the quiet heroes, passionate leaders, and remarkable role models among us. They are the hidden gems of this world, infusing a local presence with global influence. All of us have the yearning and power within us to transcend our difficulties. Our Guides call forth that power within themselves and in support of others. They are catalysts who put faith and inspiration into practice. They have moved beyond structures of belief and belonging to touch people’s lives. By their very being, they liberate others. They seek with the soul and see with the heart. What does it take to go against the grain and see beginning in endings; empty as potentially full; loss as hidden gift? How did they become a living bridge for others to cross over into the meaning and fulfillment of their own pathfinding?
GuideLives explores the vision of remarkable individuals who show us what it means to be fully human. They experience “the rapture of being alive.” They are becoming the change they want to see in the world. In this sense, our Guides embody hope and transformation from the inside-out. Their sense of self tells us that we are both creature and cosmos. They would be the first to say they are no better than anyone else. Yet in their lives, the dark side of human nature cannot overcome the light and it is a light that ignites the hearts of others.
“As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light in the darkness of mere being.” - Carl Jung
Cedric Speyer originally planned to film Tom Francoeur: A Mighty Kindness as a way of paying tribute to Tom’s immense generosity in guiding others as a psychologist, educator, and spiritual counsellor. Dr. Francoeur is Professor Emeritus of the Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University, having taught both counselling psychology and “the psychology of religious response.” Tom, now 91, has had a profound life-changing effect on those who have sought him out. Throughout his career as professor, mentor and counsellor, many so-called ‘hopeless cases’ were referred to him and found a profound acceptance they had never experienced before.
“Tom is a beacon of hope. He embodies the goodness that he affirms is inborn in every human heart. The wisdom he shares is invaluable, as is his skill in drawing out the innermost thoughts of his listeners. Tom has a keen understanding of the human condition, the result of a lifetime of learning and loving. He has a way of making people feel totally at ease in his presence. I believe Tom might be recognized as a modern day saint. A wonderful candidate for a documentary!”

When Cedric first spoke with Heidi Lasi about producing a documentary on Tom Francoeur, she saw how the idea could be applied to others whose paths and practices have been transformative. The vision for Guidelives for the Journey evolved from this tribute to Tom. Each episode will profile an inspiring Guide who represents something essential in human nature. The proposed series will show how our Guides, some well-known, others less so, contribute to the bigger story which makes life more adventuresome and meaningful for us all. It is a project informed by the InnerView approach to healing and integration, which is the search for congruency between the interior landscape of what the soul wants and our purpose in the world.
